 Our Impact

Running really smart digital means challenging assumptions, trying new tactics, and measuring outcomes. At Voter Formation Project, we’re throwing out the old playbook for voter engagement and taking a new approach to finding and communicating with people of color online.

We embrace creative solutions and—when they work—we back them up with data so that they can be shared across the voter engagement sector.

We’ve found a marriage of art and science that empowers us to deliver the best outcomes: a more active and diverse electorate.

2023 Impact

In 2023, VFP ran a statewide get-out-the-vote digital advertising campaign in Virginia to encourage registered, low-propensity people of color to participate in state and local elections. Our ads were run on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube, as well as a variety of websites and streaming platforms.

  • Our program mobilized 238,491 Virginians to vote.

  • Embedded in the program was an experiment to examine whether what an ad says or what it looks like is the main driver of voter action.

2022 Impact

For the 2022 Midterm Elections, Voter Formation Project ran a five-state voter registration program targeted at low-propensity voters of color.  We also executed an experiment in Pennsylvania to learn more about the effects of long-term versus short-term digital messaging.

Download our full 2022 report by clicking the button below. Here are highlights of our impact by the numbers:

  • Created 20,000 net registrations in areas of Pennsylvania where we targeted Black eligible voters.

  • Reached over 3.6M unregistered people across five states with digital ads in both English and Spanish.

  • Engaged over 1.6M voters in Pennsylvania with mobilization messaging ahead of Election Day.

  • Directly registered more than 9,000 people to vote.

  • According to an independent evaluation by the Tufts University Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning and Engagement, VFP’s 2022 program showed a 71% voting success rate among the people we registered. This far exceeds the average 58% voting success rate among the other online programs included in the evaluation.
